CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Winter 2018 issue of GOLDENSEAL is now available for purchase at select retailers and/or by calling the GOLDENSEAL office. GOLEDNESEAL, West Virginia’s magazine of traditional life since 1975, is published quarterly by the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History. Attached is a list of retailers where GOLDENSEAL magazine is available. The cover story pays tribute to recently retired GOLDENSEAL Editorial Assistant Kim Johnson. In addition to her decade with the magazine, Johnson is one of the best banjo players in West Virginia. She learned her craft authentically from mountain musicians born in the early 1900s and is now passing along her history and knowledge of old-time music to young traditional musicians. The magazine also honors Harry Silverstein, the driving force behind Charleston’s Community Music Association and Municipal Auditorium (which opened in 1939). His story is told largely through the memories of his daughter Lois Kaufman, a beloved longtime music teacher in Charleston. In other stories, various families discuss what it was like growing up Jewish in Charleston; Don Rice recounts a plane crash in Randolph County on Christmas Day 1931; Rice’s daughter honors this dean of Randolph County historians; former players recall our state’s first high school football game between a white and a black high school in Fairmont in 1954; and Sid Underwood pays respect to Calhoun County High School coaching great Wayne Underwood. Other topics include E. S. “Jim” Evans’ impact on 20th-century Terra Alta, the Preston Farmers Market at Terra Alta, the oil boomtown of Volcano and the efforts of Wood County and Mountwood Park to preserve this history, the winter tradition of making maple sugar and syrup and the fall tradition of making sorghum. In addition, Ellen Lambert of Grafton looks back at some memorable Armistice Days, and Emily Hilliard, the official state folklorist, shows how the West Virginia Apprenticeship Program has brought together Beckley singers Xavier Oglesby and Lady D, our state’s “First Lady of Soul.” There are also reviews of recent books, music and films related to Appalachia.
