CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Visitors to the Robert C. Byrd Courthouse in Charleston can enjoy an exhibit featuring 32 pieces of contemporary art from the West Virginia State Museum collection. The exhibit showcases the creativity of some of the state’s well-known and emerging artists.
“We are proud to share this exhibit with the visitors and employees at the federal courthouse,” said Randall Reid-Smith, commissioner of the West Virginia Division of Culture and History. “The West Virginia Juried Exhibition, from which this exhibit comes, has one of the nation’s largest endowments for a juried exhibition and allows us to grow the state’s collection of contemporary art.”
The Division introduced the biennial West Virginia Juried Exhibition in 1979. Open only to West Virginia artists, the exhibition provides the state with an opportunity to purchase art for the West Virginia State Museum collection.
“The quality of the art that is entered in this exhibition receives praise from national jurors each year the exhibition is held,” said Charles Morris, Museums director. “To date, the state has held 20 exhibitions and purchased more than 200 pieces of art, creating one of the best state-owned contemporary art collections in the country.”
The exhibit at the federal courthouse will be open until April 30. It includes artworks from the first exhibition in 1997 to 2015. Art in the show includes the work of 32 artists from 15 counties. A list of the artists and their counties is below.
