CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Winter 2019 issue of GOLDENSEAL is now available for purchase at select retailers or by calling the GOLDENSEAL office. GOLDENESEAL, West Virginia’s magazine of traditional life since 1975, is published quarterly by the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History. Attached is a list of retailers where GOLDENSEAL magazine is available. The cover story honors West Virginia’s Troubadour, Mike Morningstar of Gilmer County. Cswhipkey’s article traces Morningstar’s musical path from Parkersburg, through his Vietnam years, to a scenic hollow in Gilmer County. During his 50-plus-year music career, he has become one the best ever at writing songs about the Mountain State—from the whimsical “Brown-Eyed Country Girl” to heartfelt songs that ask poignant questions about our state: “West Virginia Girl” and “Mountaineers Are Always Free,” to name a couple. Other articles focus on Clarksburg’s Lucinda Rose, the only woman from West Virginia to die in service to her country during World War I; Gerald Milnes’ study of Lewisburg’s annual Shanghai Parade on New Year’s Day; the work of Summers County potter Jeff Diehl; the poem “Gram’s Kitchen” by Laurel Muhly-Alexander; the controversial Ritchie County school consolidation of the early 1960s; Crane’s Custom Baits, which produces some of the most popular muskie lures in the world; a box of historical treasures collected by Philippi’s Dr. Elmer Myers; and Michael Evans Snyder’s memories of the anti-strip-mining fight of 1971.
