CHARLESTON, W.Va. – John Lilly will present “West Virginia Songs” in the Archives and History Library at the Culture Center, State Capitol Complex in Charleston, on Thursday, June 18. The program begins at 6 p.m. and is free and open to the public. Lilly is an award-winning songwriter who also is recognized as an accomplished vocalist and song stylist. He is well known for his mastery of the early country music styles of Jimmie Rodgers and Hank Williams. Lilly has recorded six solo CDs since 2000. A 1996 graduate of Davis & Elkins College, Lilly recently retired as editor of Goldenseal magazine and folklife director for the West Virginia Division of Culture and History, positions he held since 1997. Previously, he was a tour guide at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville, Tenn., and associate editor of the Old-Time Herald magazine. Lilly is the editor of the book Mountains of Music: West Virginia Traditional Music from Goldenseal, and has contributed to the Grove Encyclopedia of American Music, The West Virginia Encylopedia, the Encyclopedia of Appalachia and the Country Music Encyclopedia.
