DESCRIPTION: CHARLESTON\, W.Va. – The 23rd biennial West Virginia Juried Exhibition will open at the Culture Center\, State Capitol Complex in Charleston\, along with an awards ceremony\, on Sunday\, Nov. 5\, at 2 p.m. Sixty-six West Virginia artists were selected for the exhibit\, which will feature 89 pieces\, including painting\, drawing\, mixed media\, craft\, photography\, digital art\, sculpture and print. Thirty counties are represented in the show. The exhibit opening reception and awards ceremony is free and open to the public. DESCRIPTION:The annual Archaeology Month lecture will be presented at 7 p.m. on Thursday\, Oct. 26\, by Dr. James M. Adovasio\, senior scientist at APTIM and director of archaeology at Senator John Heinz History Center. The presentation is titled “Meadowcroft Rockshelter 2023: Fifty Years Later.” Excavations at the Southwestern Pennsylvania site began 50 years ago. Meadowcroft is known as the first serious challenge to the Clovis-first peopling model that dominated American archaeological thought for decades. This presentation summarizes the salient aspects of the prehistoric record from Meadowcroft Rockshelter and discusses the role(s) the site has played in the history of American Archaeology. DESCRIPTION:On June 6\, 1944\, the Allies invaded the Normandy beaches to liberate Europe from the Nazis. More than 5\,000 ships with thousands of tanks and landing craft and nearly 200\,000 men crossed the English Channel. Hundreds of ships fell victim to German shellfire\, mines\, and torpedoes and are being documented by dive teams\, submersibles\, and underwater robots.

DESCRIPTION:This showing of Picture Proof\, a documentary by WV filmmaker Tijah Bumgarner\, is offered free at Fayette Theatre. Picture Proof chronicles everyday moments in the life of one family in West Virginia as they rebuild\, repair\, and extend their life in the aftermath of substance use disorder. Ashley Ellis is a mother who is 2 years into her recovery and works as a recovery coach for other women. For now\, her mom Debi Ellis has guardianship of 2 year-old Piper\, Ashley’s daughter. Their family structure takes time as they work through building up what could have crumbled. The film explores the labor of recovery and the love of family and community\, set against the backdrop of often callous representations of the opioid epidemic and those suffering from substance use disorder in the context of a desire to be socially accepted.
