DESCRIPTION:Do you have a mystery fossil? Bring it for expert identification by Dr. Elizabeth Rhenberg from the WV Geological and Economic Survey! Don’t have a fossil? A fossil display by members of the West Virginia Fossil Club will showcase some of their specimens and answer questions about collecting fossils\, and Taylor McCoy from Pittsburgh will display a collection of replica “Teeth and Claws”. Family friendly activities relating to fossils include making a fossil cast\, viewing a tiny fossil insect through a microscope\, and a museum hunt with fossil clues. New this year: we will be joined by folks from the SMART-Center in Wheeling with a display of “Life in the West Virginia Coal Swamp” and a fossil identification challenge. \n\n\n\nLecture by E. President Thomas Jefferson had Burr charged with treason for plotting to carve out a kingdom for himself from parts of Louisiana and Mexico. The case also involved the Blennerhassetts at Blennerhassett Island. This program was produced by the John Marshall Foundation and is adapted from a play by David L. Robbins.

SUMMARY:Film: The Lost Ones: The Long Journey Home
DESCRIPTION:A documentary film by Susan Rose and Manuel Saralegui \n\n\n\nThis is the story of two Lipan Apache children who were captured along the Texas-Mexican border in 1877 by the 4th U.S. Cavalry after massacring almost everyone in their village. Kasetta and her brother\, Jack\, lived with a military family before being sent to the Carlisle boarding school in Pennsylvania. They then each lived with different families and Kasetta bore a son\, who was sent to the Carlisle school upon her death. The children were never forgotten by their families\, who did not know what had happened to them or where they were buried until two centuries later. In 2009\, Lipan Apache descendants traveled to Carlisle to offer their blessings and send their Lost Ones home.

DESCRIPTION:The museum’s monthly lecture and film series will be featured towards the end of January. The 60-minute documentary film “Pearl Harbor: Into the Arizona” will be shown at 7 p.m. on Thursday\, Jan. 27. The battleship USS Arizona was sunk during the infamous attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7\, 1941\, at a cost of 1\,177 lives. Many of the bodies of those killed were never recovered and the ship is regarded as a cemetery and sacred space. Divers are not permitted entry to preserve the sanctity of the site\, so remote underwater vehicles (ROVs) were used to take an in-depth look inside the ship and assess its condition\, revealing a moving picture of life aboard the ship on that fateful morning. The picture is all the more poignant through personal stories shared by several veterans who survived the attack\, including one veteran who returns for what might be his last visit to the ship on which he served.

The film begins with Ice Age hunter-gatherers and moves on to people who adopted more agrarian lifestyles. The documentary focuses on earthworks and mounds like the Poverty Point earthworks in Louisiana and the Hopewell culture of the Ohio River Valley. European contact is evident at Emerald Mound in Mississippi – still used ceremonially when the early European explorers arrived.
